Lakshya Sen and the Invisible Shackles – When Advantage Vanishes

Lakshya Sen entered the 2026 Asian Games badminton arena with a team bronze medal still fresh around his neck and the weight of a nation's expectations pressing on his shoulders. In a 70-minute decider that ended 12–21, 21–15, 14–21 against former world champion Loh Kean Yew, Sen once again let a match-winning advantage slip through his fingers. The scoreboard may show a routine R32 exit for the world No. 14, but the deeper story lies in a familiar pattern: fast starts, emotional surges, and a third-game collapse rooted not in a lack of talent, but in the invisible shackles of expectation. Sen built a 5–1 lead only to surrender 10 consecutive points. He clawed back to 13–13 in the final game, only to lose five straight points and hit the net on match point. Loh, calm and patient as ever, absorb the storm and waited for Sen to self-destruct. This isn't a tactical mystery – it's a mental one. Sen's career is full of close-to-greatness moments: Olympic fourth place, Commonwealth gold, Asian Games team silver. Yet the individual Asian Games medal remains missing. The lesson from Nagoya is clear: Sen doesn't lack the skill to be a champion; he lacks the ability to stay composed when it matters most. The next chapter of his career will be defined not by how hard he trains, but by how well he manages his own mind on the biggest stage.
