Cong An Nhan Dan and the 2.01m Gamble: Height Doesn't Score, Systems Do

"Matches are decided where the crowd isn't looking." On 11 September, in Round 1 of the 2026-2027 Vietnamese First Division, Cong An Nhan Dan beat Long An 2-1 thanks to a brace from Nguyen Hoang Anh, a substitute. The stands remember that name. I remember something else on the bench: Santos Thaileon, last season's top scorer with 14 goals for Quy Nhon United, was not registered by head coach Nguyen Duc Thang. Not a single foreign player took the field. A club chasing the title and promotion opened its season with an all-domestic side, and won through a backup option.

A few weeks later, the club formerly known as PVF-CAND announced a new signing: Gonzalo Fornari, a 26-year-old Brazilian striker standing 2.01 metres tall. Last season he played for Busan IPark in K League 2 and scored seven goals. That height places him in a very narrow group: the tallest foreign player currently active in both the First Division and V-League.

These facts only mean something when placed side by side. And side by side, they sketch a tactical gamble that almost nobody names correctly.

Context: one club buying two opposite striker profiles in a single season

Cong An Nhan Dan are not short on ambition. Before the season they signed Santos Thaileon, a striker who scored 14 goals and led the First Division scoring charts with Quy Nhon United. That was a buy-goals signing, acquiring a record already proven in the very league the club wants to win.

Then Gonzalo Fornari arrived. A completely different profile. Thaileon is a box striker who lives on positioning and first-time finishing. Fornari is a 2.01m target man who lives on long balls, aerial duels and hold-up play. These two profiles require two different supply systems, two different patterns, two different ways of playing.

This is the point I want to make clearly: a club that buys two opposite strikers is not a stronger club, it is a club that has not decided what kind of football it wants to play.

The upcoming schedule: on 6 October, Cong An Nhan Dan host Hue at home in the National Cup qualifier. On 11 October, they travel to Khanh Hoa in Round 2 of the First Division. Registration deadlines: the National Cup closes at 15:00 on 17 September, the First Division closes at 15:00 on 15 October.

Between those two dates lies one month. One month for Nguyen Duc Thang to answer the biggest question of the season: who is the striker for the competition that decides promotion?

Height doesn't score. Crosses score.

Based on my experience watching matches in both the V-League and the First Division, I see a pattern repeated often enough to call it a rule: foreign players taller than 1.95m arriving in Vietnam are usually expected to become aerial weapons, yet their success rate falls far below that expectation. The reason is not physical. It is supply.

The most recent lesson is Kyle Hudlin. Standing 2.06m, English, he played for Nam Dinh in the 2026-2026 season. His resume looked excellent: a brace in the 2026 Super Cup (Nam Dinh lost 2-3 to Cong An Ha Noi), a brace against the Vietnam national team in a 4-0 friendly win, and a goal in a 1-3 defeat away to Gamba Osaka in the 2026-2026 AFC Champions League. On continental and international stages, he scored. In the 2026-2026 V-League, he scored none in five matches and left early through injury.

A 2.06m striker scoring in the AFC Champions League but drawing blanks at home, where defensive quality is lower. That sounds absurd until you look at how the ball gets delivered.

Vietnamese clubs play long balls constantly, but produce very few quality crosses. Long balls and crosses are different things. A long ball clears the defender's feet. A cross reaches the striker's head. The First Division produces plenty of long balls and very few accurate crosses. A 2.01m target man standing in the box without service is just a tall silhouette surrounded by four short centre-backs.

That is why I do not believe 2.01m is the answer by itself. It is a tool. Tools need operators.

The First Division operates differently, and Fornari comes from a different environment

Fornari arrives from K League 2, where Korean football is structured, exploits width, and midfielders know how to deliver into the half-spaces. In Vietnam's First Division, the picture is entirely different. Defensive lines push higher but collide more, space behind is scarcer because everyone plays safe, and referees allow more physical duels.

For a 2.01m player, every attacking phase is a collision with at least two defenders. In the congested calendar of the National Cup plus the First Division, accumulated injury risk is far higher than for a 1.75m player. The Kyle Hudlin story ending in injury is not a random detail to dismiss. It is a data pattern.

So what is Cong An Nhan Dan actually buying? They are buying a Plan B for a club that has no stable Plan A.

Look back at the Long An match. No foreign players. A 2-1 win through a brace from Nguyen Hoang Anh, a substitute. A club that wants promotion but wins its opening match through a bench option has a midfield problem, not a striker problem. The ball does not reach the box early enough or sharply enough. Changing strikers in that condition is like replacing a tap head while the pipe stays clogged.

This is where the registration rule becomes a tactical weapon. The National Cup locks its list at 15:00 on 17 September, the First Division at 15:00 on 15 October. That means Cong An Nhan Dan can register a foreign player for the Cup, test him for a few matches, then decide whether to keep the slot for the league. Very few First Division clubs have the squad depth to use this mechanism as a laboratory. Cong An Nhan Dan do. The only question is whether they dare.

The contrarian angle: where I could be wrong

There is a scenario that would force me to rewrite this piece. If the 2026-2027 First Division truly is a league of aerial duels and physicality, with deep defensive blocks, heavy pitches late in the season, and most goals coming from set pieces, then a 2.01m target man is not a gamble at all but the optimal move. In that scenario, Fornari scores 12 to 15 goals and I am the one explaining why I misread the league.

There is another scenario too: Fornari was not signed to start. He was signed to pressure Santos Thaileon. A reigning top scorer left out in Round 1, then watching his club sign a 2.01m striker, will get the message. That is a dressing-room move, not a tactical one. If so, Nguyen Duc Thang is playing a different game from the one I am analysing.

"A shock opinion is only worth something when it stands on a detail others overlooked." The details I lean on are the bench on 11 September and the Kyle Hudlin file. Someone else can lean on the 2.01m figure and seven goals in K League 2. Both are true. Only one of them leads to a promotion ticket.

"Data walks me to the stadium gate, my eyes walk into the dressing room." The number 2.01m says only that Fornari is tall. It does not say Cong An Nhan Dan know how to put the ball on his head.

My prediction, and how to check it

By 15:00 on 15 October, the player registered long-term for the First Division will be Santos Thaileon, not Gonzalo Fornari. Fornari will be used mainly in the National Cup and off the bench, the correct role for a Plan B. I predict he scores fewer than five league goals this season, and if Cong An Nhan Dan win the title, the decisive goal will come from a domestic player.

If I am wrong, if Fornari scores more than ten and becomes the centre of the system, then Vietnam's First Division is shifting in a direction I have not yet seen. And when that happens, I will be the first to write it again.
